Mark 8:22-33 Peter was without a doubt a leader among the disciples. In this text, he experienced the highs and lows of faith in a very short amount of time. He was the disciple that affirmed that Jesus was the Christ, and in the parallel passage in Matthew 16 Christ affirmed that Peter would be one of the building blocks of the church. Yet in almost his next breath, Peter began rebuking Christ concerning Christ’s future suffering and death. Jesus could not allow Peter to define him, for this is the antithesis of faith. Christ must be allowed to define himself.
