In our text, we discover the culmination of the greatest trade ever made. It is all evil for Jesus- he has been stripped of his dignity, stripped of self-control, stripped of his clothes, stripped of his body, and finally stripped of his life. From a human point of view, no one would go through this scenario willingly- these events are the worst nightmare of rational men. Yet Jesus entered into this willingly, because our eternal well-being is more important to him than his own temporary comfort. Thus we see that the suffering of Jesus was not only physical but spiritual. Our text portrays Jesus’ hopelessness in these hours.
