1 Corinthians 14:20-28
Paul continues with his lengthy discourse on the purpose of tongues, as well as their abuse and misuse. In all of his teachings on tongues, we are reminded that the primary purpose is the corporate edification of the body of Christ- that all Christians in the body have an obligation to build up one another in the faith. In the early church, during the apostolic age, this took place through the spiritual gifts of tongues, prophecies, revelations, miracles, and so forth, as the Scriptures were being given. In our time, this extremely important ministry of edification takes place through words of encouragement, affirmation, and occasionally rebuke, from the Scriptures themselves.
