Colossians 3:16-17 Upon closer inspection of vs. 16 we see that Paul is actually talking about the indwelling word of Christ in a corporate sense- which is to say, that within the body of Christ, our interaction with one another must be based upon the word or gospel of Christ. So now in vs. 16, Paul explains how this word of Christ must dwell within the body of the church. As Paul is describing for us, the church does not exist merely as a social outlet for like-minded followers of Jesus Christ, where we hang out and enjoy our commonalities together. We must acknowledge that in many churches and worship services, our bonding unfortunately takes place in greater measure due to our common interests of families, sports, friendships, vocation and careers, or other earthly minded pursuits. But in our text this morning, Paul reminds us that the saints within the church bond primarily over the gospel of Christ, or what he calls the word of Christ.
