Just As I Am

Mark 2:13-17  Mark 2 and 3 chronicle the encounters between Jesus and the religious elite, the scribes and Pharisees. In each encounter, Jesus performs some good deed, which is then criticized by these religious leader. Jesus defends himself through a pithy maxim. In this text, Jesus calls a new disciple to himself. The problem was that the religious elite would never have accepted this man, because he was a despised tax collector. Through this narrative, Jesus demonstrates that he accepts all sinners just as they are, and gladly transforms them from the inside out.
