Mark 11:12-14, 19-26 Intertwined with the narrative of the temple cleansing is Jesus’ cursing of a fig tree. This was an unusual event, because this fig tree was full of leaves but without fruit; furthermore, it was not the season for mature fruit. Yet the tree should have held immature fruit at least, which it did not. Jesus used this fig tree as a picture of Israel, having the promise of spiritual fruitfulness but without the reality of it; also, he turned the metaphor into a picture of our faith. Those who believe God can do much more than merely cursing fig trees and casting mountains.
