In 1953, a brand-new church was formed in Gibraltar, Michigan, and was called the Gibraltar Baptist Church. A few years later, the church changed its name to First Baptist Church. For the last fifty years, our church has been well known within the community as First Baptist Church. So why change the name?
A church name ought to clearly reflect some important facts about the church. The membership of First Baptist Church feels that a new name will more accurately reflect our core values and purpose within the community. By a unanimous vote of our membership, we have decided to change our name to Gibraltar Bible Baptist Church.
Gibraltar – We value the people of our community, and want to let you know that we are a vibrant, intangible part of this community. If people outside of the community desire to attend our church and worship with us, we want to make it easy for you to find us as well!
Bible – We carefully teach God’s word, the Bible. The Bible is not a book written by men. Rather, it began in the mind of God, and was passed on to man through the process of inspiration. Because it is God’s word, it is authoritative for our thinking and living.
Baptist – We are an independent, unaffiliated congregation of Baptists. This means that while we hold to historic Baptist doctrines, especially regarding salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, as well as baptism by immersion, we have no official affiliation with any other church, denomination, or sect.
Church – We are a spiritual fellowship of believers in Jesus. Our church is a place for people to gather for worship, Bible instruction, and spiritual encouragement. We earnestly desire to tell everyone we can about the saving grace of Jesus Christ, and to help Christians new and old in their spiritual journey.
Our church is firmly rooted in its history, but excited and energized about the future. Our best days lie ahead! You are welcome to join us at Gibraltar Bible Baptist Church, and see why this is a special place to worship God and grow in faith.
